What is with locals and hating on people speaking in English?
I just despise reading comments of people (Facebook users specifically) who go become judgy mcjudgemental pants whenever they see or hear people speaking in English. Like, what really is wrong about using English and learning or speaking other languages in general? Aren't you proud that our people can speak and converse in a foreign language? I get the slight dislike if the person is making English his/her priority and not being able to speak in their first language but really though, I'm pretty sure 80% of people here can speak both fluently. It's more a matter of language preferences.
I'm going to use myself as an example. I can speak both English and Malay fluently, but I prefer speaking in English because I am better at using proper English whereas my Malay capability is slightly more restricted to daily conversations and simple essays. Still, that doesn't take away from the fact that I am fluent in both languages because fluency differs depending on people. For me, fluency is being able to convey my ideas and thoughts comfortably in the language even if I don't have the right words, and not when I am able to speak the language as well as my mother tongue. Because frankly, that would mean I'm fluent in neither languages. Something I admit is kinda odd about me is that I can only speak to strangers in English lol. It doesn't matter whether I know you can speak in that language or not, I'm still going to continuously speak to you in English because for some reason, my Malay just becomes 50% worse whenever I speak to strangers. With my friends though, it's completely fine.
Anyway, I'm just saying that there is practically nothing wrong in being able to speak in different languages. In fact, there's a beauty to it so if you people really can't stand seeing other people with language skills better than you, then it really is your own problem not theirs. I just think it really is dumb to be hating because how do you expect yourself to travel abroad or make new friends? Are you going to speak Malay to foreigners? The answer is no, you're not so why be such a pain about it. I'm assuming these kinds of people don't travel outside their own country though so to be honest, it really just is a matter of deeply buried jealousy.
I'm by no means judging anyone for not being able to speak English though because people can always learn and if they would rather not, then that's your choice y'know. Just make sure you don't got cray over people who can because that too, is their choice.
xx
